Environmental Education

What is Environmental Education?

Here some definitions of environmental education

“the process of giving students and the public the knowledge they need to protect the environment” dictionary.cambridge.org

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) states that Environmental Education is vital in imparting an inherent respect for nature amongst society and in enhancing public environmental awareness.

Our View

For Eco Marine Malta, environmental education is about gaining experiences by engaging in practical activities while answering these questions:

  • What does the environment do for us?
  • What do we do for the environment?
  • What can we do to protect it?
  • Our targets are schools, tourists and local communities.

Many times, lack of knowledge about the environment and “how it works” leads to damaging behaviour to nature around us. Education is the basis for respect, good practice and therefore environmental protection.
During #OurOcean, the conference held in Malta last October (2017), the parties recognised the need to build a global ocean movement: connecting ocean science, education and industry for sustainable development.

We of Eco Marine will contribute by spreading our knowledge not only in schools, the local community and to tourists, but also by offering boat tours, as part of onsite activities. We are sure that direct experiences help people to fully understand and interiorise the message of conservation and protection that we want to convey.

We learn by doing, we understand by touching, observing and smelling this is the concept of our teaching activities that aren’t standard lectures even when we are in a classroom.
We propose two type of activities: “activities on the territory” and “classroom activities”.
